Welcome to our new cohort of HATCH Ventures!

In January 2019, we welcomed our newest cohort of HATCH ventures to join our collaborative startup community. The HATCH venture accelerator program was established in 2016 as a joint effort between UBC’s Institute for Computing, Information and Cognitive Systems (ICICS) and entrepreneurship@UBC and to date has served over 30 ventures.

For those involved in the program, HATCH provides more than physical office and lab space. The vision of establishing HATCH was to provide promising ventures with guidance, a community, and mentorship to develop and optimize their technologies and businesses. HATCH aims to provide entrepreneurs with the tools and guidance to succeed in the rapidly evolving entrepreneurial landscape.

“I graduated from the Sauder School of Business and I feel very lucky to be a UBC alumni. We had the privilege to go through a number of the different e@UBC programs when we were first building our business.” says Kerry Costello, COO of HeadCheck Health. “It became apparent to us that HATCH is another resource for us to tap into the fantastic mentors that are available and to reconnect with our network here at UBC.”

The latest cohort welcomed seven new incoming ventures, spanning a vast array of disciplines such as computer science, chemistry, and medicine. Equally diverse, the ventures touch upon an expansive range of industry sectors, including a concussion management system, footwear intelligence metric system, and more.

One of the ventures joining the newest cohort had benefited in more than one way from the startup community at the UBC. HeadCheck Health initially started as a class project at UBC and has now partnered with BC Hockey League to effectively detect concussions in players.

“Hatch was the natural progression to continue surrounding ourselves with other fantastic entrepreneurs and the mentorship you get from this fantastic community,  we are thankful to have the opportunity to work with HATCH.” commented Oban Mactavish CFO of Hubly, who joined the newest HATCH cohort.
